Refugees scared of citizenship test
  • A fear of failing Australia's citizenship test is stopping refugees from applying to become citizen, a Victorian ethnic group says.
  • It's created barrier with the refugees, who were afraid of going to the test. They have been traumatised, never had education and the fear of failing is a big issue.
  • The people feel 'why are they testing us, if they didn't want us, why did they bring us here ?'
  • The government said there were fears the level of English used in the test had "crept up" to native speaker level, rather than the basic level supposed to be used.
  • Since the test was introduced last October, 1,286 people failed it at their first attempt. Mr Afra said there should be concessions for refugee groups who came from "less fortunate" background, or these people would remain stateless.

  • 1929 - Fred Hallows born in New Zealand.
  • 1960 - Got a job in Australia.
  • 1965 - Became head of eye department in a Sydney hospital.
  • 1970 - Helped launch national program to attack eye diseases in Aboriginal Australians.
  • 1980 - Was travelling all over the world to help set up eye health program in developing countries.
  • 1989 - Was dying of cancer.
  • 1993 - Died

Nelson Mandela (Turning Points & Achievement)

Turning Points:

became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African Society, Man. became involved in politics.
helped found the ANC Youth League
Mandela had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison
- Man released in 1990.
Nelson Mandela recently lost his eldest son.


Achievement:

In 1952 Mandela and Tambo opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa. 
helped found the ANC Youth League. 
- Associated with many educational programmes and initiatives such as Make Poverty History Campaign.
- On 10 May 1994 Man. was elected State President of South Africa on and was President until June 1999
 His advocacy of reconciliation led to international acclaim and importantly the trust of the White African population.
-Mandela has worked hard to campaign on this issue.
 Received many prestigious awards.
In 1993 Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with F.W. De Klerk

  • 1918 - Born in Gunu, S.A
  • 1944 - Helped found the ANC Youth League
  • 1949 - Programme of Action adopted
  • 1950 - S.A. state become repressive , Mand. charged with treason
  • 1952 - Mand.  & Tambo opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa
  • 1960 - Sharpeville massacre of 63 black South African’s changed political climate1962 - Arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment
  • 1990 - Released from prison
  • 1990-1994 - S.A. society suffered inter cultural violence between ANC and Inkarta supporters
  • 1993 - Awarded  Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1994-1999 - Selected State President of South Africa
  • 2003 - Dec. 5 died
